HEART TRANSPLANT

The Heart Fund is developing the first pediatric heart transplant program in India because every child has a right to a heart of last resort

A NEW BREATH

A NEW

HEART

In developing countries, lack of access to care leads to late diagnosis and irreversible complications that condemn the most vulnerable children very early.

A heart transplant is the only solution: it is an exceptional measure.

In India, 200,000 children are born with cardiac malformations each year; it is the country with the highest rate of congenital cardiopathies. In Kochi, The Heart Fund collaborates with expert teams at university hospital centers in the context of a pediatric transplant program.

From providing very specific surgical material to transferring skills, The Heart Fund takes part in a national public health mission that provides the hope of a new heart to hundreds of thousands of children on the waiting list.

AN EXCEPTIONAL SOLUTION

Designed for children with terminal cardiac insufficiency from an advanced congenital cardiopathy or a cardiomyopathy, a heart transplant is an onerous intervention.

This logistically complex procedure requires a very strict evaluation and indication, optimal post-operative tracking and specific treatment.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM

A heart transplant is a highly specialized surgical intervention that requires a multidisciplinary team including heart surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists and nurses.

This type of procedure can be done only in an appropriate environment with local teams and in coordination with the national transplant center.

PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

Heart transplant programs are regulated by government bodies and require coordination between the hospital center, transport structures and the authorities in charge of organ donations.

These complex programs represent a major step forward in public health that offers a concrete solution to people without therapeutic hope.
